Del Norte Place

In 1912, the territory of Arizona became the 48th state and a local veterinarian named Dr. James Collier Norton purchased a plot of land to be developed as Del Norte Place. He built his own home on the property's northern edge and laid out the rest with straight, tree lined streets. The first homes built in Del Norte were of the English Cottage style, characterized by red brick walls and steeply gabled roofs. The Great Depression brought an end to Dr. Norton's control of the project; it was taken over by the Federal government. Under the direction of the FHA, most of the rest of the homes in Del Norte were constructed from 1936 to 1941, albeit in a much-simplified version of the Spanish Colonial style. They were often one-story, brick and stucco dwellings with only a modest amount of tile work for decoration. And in the years that followed the war, the development was completed. This time, the developers chose the ever-popular Ranch style; something Dr. Norton would never have considered some thirty years prior.
