East Alvarado

Drawing off the success of the Alvarado Place development, East Alvarado was born in 1929 with a single "spec" home built in the elegant Spanish Colonial Revival style. However, with the arrival of the Great Depression a short time later, building was halted and the home stood alone until 1937. Then, prompted by the FHA, the remaining twenty-nine homes of East Alvarado would be constructed in just five years. Keeping with the times, this new construction would be much more austere, consisting of Ranch and Early Ranch style homes. Even today, East Alvarado stands as a model for the "suburban ranch" neighborhoods that would spread throughout Phoenix in the years to follow.
