F. Q. Story
This neighborhood was settled on land purchased by Francis Quarles Story in 1887. Although he never lived in Phoenix, Story was influential in the development of local landmarks, including Grand Avenue. Story never actually developed any of the land and, in fact, sold the entire two hundred acre parcel in 1919. A year later, the parcel was subdivided and development began.
The original design for this neighborhood was for a "streetcar suburb" with homes laid out on deep, narrow lots to minimize walking distance to the streetcar lines. As the automobile became more common in the late 20's, houses built to the west began to incorporate detached garages and porte cocheres.
When the eastern section of Story was built, a building cost minimum was set at $5000. This attracted many professionals such as physicians, doctors and lawyers. As the area was developed to the west, residential price restrictions were relaxed and more working class families called Story home.
