Roosevelt
Roosevelt was the first (and one of the largest) district in Phoenix to receive historic designation. Settled in the late 1800's, it was comprised of nine distinct developments (or additions). The first addition was settled by Colonel J.T. Simms in 1895 and was bounded by Central, Roosevelt, Third and Moreland. Subsequent additions were settled to the west and north as the city grew. The neighborhood was home to many prominent Phoenicians including Congressman Carl Hayden and Baron M. Goldwater, founder of Goldwater's department store (and father of Senator Barry M. Goldwater). As Roosevelt has matured, the distinction between specific "additions" has blurred. Today, it is enjoying a rebirth as a neighborhood of diversity and character close to the heart of the city.
